Modern Idolatry
Lenten series, Feb 22-Mar 29
This year during Lent*, we’re focusing on idolatry, but not the ancient false worship of statues or ancestors. Instead, we'll consider what parts of our lives and culture, even if normally considered "good", can become more of our focus in life than Christ. We'll cover topics like sports, consumerism, pleasure, comfort, politics, and image/fame.
My prayer for each of us is that we'll be made a bit uncomfortable during this season of Lent, as a result of the Holy Spirit convicting us. Then we can bring our sin and guilt to the cross and seek to live in a different, more God-honoring way out of our gratitude that the tomb is empty. -Pastor K.C.
*What actually is Lent?
Lent is a season of preparation and repentance during which we anticipate Good Friday and Easter. Just as we carefully prepare for big events in our personal lives, like a wedding or commencement, Lent invites us to make our hearts ready for remembering Jesus’ passion and celebrating Jesus’ resurrection.
This practice of a 40-day preparation period began in the Christian church during the third and fourth centuries. The number 40 carries biblical significance based on the 40 years Israel spent in the wilderness and Jesus’ 40-day fast in the wilderness. The 40 days of Lent begin on Ash Wednesday and continue through holy week, not counting Sundays (which are reserved for celebratory worship). In practice, many congregations choose to focus Sunday worship on the themes of repentance and renewal.
